The Goshen Public Library is actively seeking volunteers to help with two projects. The first project is entering the cataloging data for our document collection into a computerized index. The skills necessary are moderate typing ability and willingness to work on a computer (knowledge of computers is not necessary, as the program is straightforward and its use can be readily taught).

We are also seeking volunteers to help index the Independent Republican. This might be an ideal project for a retired teacher or librarian. The skills necessary for this project are an understanding of how indexes work, and understanding of uniform subject terminology, the ability to analyze articles for subject content, typing and a willingness to work on a computer. For both projects volunteers must be willing and able to commit a regular on-going schedule for training, and then implementation of the project.

These indexes are important to making Goshen history accessible to researchers. The Independent Republican is perhaps the single most important resource to document events in Goshen history as far back as the Civil War. Indexing the paper is labor intensive, but it is made manageable (we hope) by the fact that it is a weekly.

If you have time to commit to either project, please contact Anita Whitehead at 294-6606.
